If your wedding has been unceremoniously cancelled by this year being just the worst, first know that you’re not alone. Approximately 64% of weddings have been impacted this year either due to postponements, cancellations, or travel logistics, with an estimated loss of £87.5bn to the global wedding industry. But look on the bright side, loverboys and girls. With another year to save, that gospel choir or marquee that was out of reach before may be a little more realistic. Set up an account for something you had your heart set on and get planning something even more magical – we’re talking small woodland creatures gathering around you, bluebirds carrying the veil in their beaks and a tiger riding a unicorn made of lightning as your celebrant.

Of course, it’s worth noting that everyone’s experience is different, and for many, money may be tighter than ever. That’s ok, your wedding would be beautiful if it was just you and your intended, a bunch of flowers from the local supermarket, and a bottle of fizz. If you do have an opportunity to put cash aside, we’ve done a little bit of marriage maths for you.

You've not spent...

Money on your stag or hen. The average money spent attending a stag or hen do works out at about £204.82 per person.

So you could...

Treat your wedding party. On the weekend you were meant to go away, why not arrange to have a little treat package dropped at their doors so you can enjoy a virtual celebration together? We’re talking brunch ingredients, fizz, games, BBQ packs, face packs (yes, the lads too - you still need to look pretty for next year’s wedding).

You've not spent...

Money on your flowers. According to Interflora, the average cost of wedding flowers is somewhere around £1500.

So you could...

Invest in EVEN MORE FLOWERS. Obviously if flowers were important to you this year, they’re going to be important to you next year. So why not add a little more to your flower budget? You could go so extra, you could be the Lizzo of flowers! The Ru Paul of statement foliage! Think chandeliers made of rainbow-hued dried blooms. A pampas grass arch! Gigantic things of hydrangeas on every table like you see at rich peoples’ weddings.

You've not spent...

Money on flying to a 5-star resort. The average cost of a destination wedding is £6585, and that’s without flights and everything else you need to pay for.

So you could...

Have a luxury romantic weekend in Blighty. Destination weddings look like they might be a no for the time being, but you can always pull out all the stops for a super luxe, romantic stay-cation together on the weekend you’d planned your nuptials. If you’re in the rethinking or replanning stages of your beach wedding, have a weekend where you dress up in your finery, go on romantic walks, and have food delivered from the fanciest restaurant in town. You can even dance to your favourite slow jam, we won’t tell anyone. Put the money you’ve set aside ready for next year.

You've not spent...

Money on a DJ and Band. An individual musician could cost upwards of £600, while a band is more likely to be in the thousands.

So you could...

With the wedding industry on hold, paying a deposit to your musician(s) to hold your date is a nice gesture. Alternatively, you have time to put a little more in your “Wedding Jams” budget making that string quartet, acoustic duo, or gospel choir ever more attainable.

You've not spent...

Money on a photographer - around £1590 on average.

So you could...

Again, with most of their work cancelled for the year, it’s lovely to support your wedding photographer if you can, paying a deposit to hold your date. Why not ask them to come over for a lockdown doorstep couple or family photoshoot, making sure you remember 2020 for all the right reasons - not just the wrong ones!

Missing out on your dream wedding is no small thing, and you’re being very brave. For now focus on all the extra time you have to craft the extra details and write your vows and speeches (if you still end up writing them the night before, that’s ok too). Hang in there lovebirds, the big day will be that much sweeter when it finally rolls around...
